After all our stuff was packed and out of the house, I worked in the office for a few days, had my Shakeology breakfast shake in the morning, ate take out for dinner every night and slept on that air mattress at night. It had a leak in it, so I’d end up blowing it up at least once in the middle of the night!
We had some contractors starting to come through the house for painting, and I needed to get out of the house before the flooring people could come do some carpeting and touch ups. The realtor’s team would make sure the contractors would be able to get into the house while I was gone. I made sure my daughter’s cat (Don Julio) was being taken care of by our closest friends, who are also conveniently happen to be cat people. Our daughter was still finishing up her summer job at a Cub Scout overnight camp, so needed to find someone to take care of him for about two weeks until she was going back to Alabama for her senior year of college.
I left my car in the garage locked up with some valuables I wasn’t taking with me and had the same closest friends drop me off at the airport, checking in a monstrous bag of clothes and belongings to start my adventure in Austin!!!
My husband picked me up from the airport after I picked up my absolutely humongous bag of belongings from this baggage claim that I’ve come to know well. Isn’t it pretty!!!
He took me back to the Extended Stay America he was staying at in North Austin and it was horrible!!! Especially considering I’m now working from home full time and was stuck in that one horrible room all day trying to work and then all evening when he came home at the end of the day. It was so dark, dirty, and there was no kitchen supplies, other than what he picked up for himself at Target, and no real way to make a decent meal.
I told him this would last a week and I was going to find us an AirBnB to stay at downtown starting that weekend until the boys were coming down for their leg of the move, which we all agreed was going to be Labor Day weekend. I would then have setup another AirBnB in the suburbs where we could register the boys for school, but so much on all this a bit later.
For those of you who have done one of these cross country moves or settling in between houses, have you done an Extended Stay America, or other such place, how did it go? How long were you able to last there without going insane, or is my case special because I’m work from home and not out of the house (or where we live) all day?
