We Got COVID for Christmas

This year has been completely insane. If working from home, while juggling two homeschooling 6th graders, while my husband tries to find a new job hasn’t been enough, my husband and I got COVID a couple of days before Christmas.

Let me tell you the symptoms of COVID are super weird and everyone does seem to have different symptoms. I started with a cough the Tuesday before Christmas. I thought it was my normal allergy cough from the real tree in the house until I woke up with a fever of 102 on Wednesday morning. I had this fever for that day and the next, sometimes as high at 103. I would take ibuprofen to bring my fever down, but it would never go down 100%. It felt like a sinus infection. I had such a bad sinus headache. I spend a lot of those two days sleeping. I called the doctor that first morning and as Tom didn’t have any symptoms yet, it was just me who went to the doctor’s parking lot to be tested from my car. Later that day, Tom started getting congested and the second day had a low grade fever. We had him sleep in another room all this time just in case. I still had hope that it wasn’t COVID as I had my sense of smell and taste.

We told the kids we were postponing Christmas. We hadn’t wrapped presents yet and didn’t want to infect anyone else in the house, as our 20 year old daughter home from college and the two boys were healthy. The younger of the twins had a tough time with this news, but he got through it. Christmas Day we were hoping to have my test results back. I called the doctor on call at 5PM and she called me back. They probably wouldn’t get my results back until the next day. She said it was OK for us to mask and glove up to wrap the presents and if we wanted to watch the kids open their presents the next day from across the room with everyone having masks on, that should be fine. The day after Christmas, right after the kids opened their presents, I got the call that it was positive.

My husband and kids got their COVID tests this morning and we are waiting for their results. We are quite sure he has it. Both him and I lost our sense of smell and taste yesterday morning and it continues today. We’re a little congested, but our temperatures have been fine and we haven’t been as tired, although we are sleeping really well and maybe a nap is thrown in once a day, but it helps the time pass. We had him drive our car on his own to the test this morning and had our daughter drive the boys as they have all been symptom-free. They say these results should be a day or two.

Our daughter has been fabulous. She’s been taking care of feeding us all and keeping an eye on the boys. She was supposed to go skiing for the first time in her life over winter break with her boyfriend’s family, but that was canceled as even his brother tested positive for COVID this week.

One of the questions people keep asking as we give them the news is, “Do you know where you got it from?” It’s not as simple as a finger pointing. I did run some errands this weekend getting ready for Christmas. We are very good with wearing masks and sanitizing hands, but masks are not 100% foolproof, although they are better than nothing. I think there is just so many cases of it out there right now, nothing is 100% safe.

I can’t wait to finish our quarantine, which is not until Jan 2nd and 24 hours after all symptoms are gone. I’m hoping we are good for Jan 2nd! It’s getting so boring hanging in our room. We’ve watched a lot of Netflix. I’ve been reading some books. I don’t think I’ll actually make my 2020 Reading Challenge of 80 books this year, but I’ll make a dent in what I haven’t finished. We’re planning on putting together our Vision Boards for 2021 and working on our goals for the next year. I feel like 2020 is like New York City … if you can make it through this, you can make it anywhere!
